Scott’s Cheap Flights is a fully remote company and has been since day one. Working at a fully remote company often means an easy commute from your bed to your desk, flexible schedules, and super lax dress codes. But, you miss out on getting to know each other and celebrating wins in person. Scott’s Cheap Flights has two fully-covered week-long retreats every year for the team to bond and celebrate in person at a unique destination.

In April of 2022, we took the team to Charleston, South Carolina to hang out, team build and go on some wild adventures. We stayed at the Wild Dunes beachside resort, located in the Isle of Palms. We kicked it pool side, played team games, experienced the night life of downtown Charleston, went on a scavenger hunt, learned how to make fancy cocktails and the craft of being a blacksmith, battled it out in combat archery, and explored the amazing Capers Island.

Everyone arrived on Monday and we made sure folks had ample time to check-in, unpack, and decompress before the fun began! The only event we had planned for the first day was a full-company dinner to welcome everyone and do introductions! We spent the second day of the retreat with our functional teams. It was such a valuable experience to organically brainstorm ideas, feed off of each other’s energy, and talk about our wins and learnings in person. Although this was the “work” portion of the retreat, it didn’t feel like work at all (especially when you get to do it pool side)! Later that evening, we played “Getting to Know You” BINGO and learned some incredibly fun facts about each other.

Team bonding is one of the biggest goals we have for our retreat, and in our opinion, the best way to do this is through games! Company Field Day consisted of Minute to Win It-type games. We inched Oreo’s from our forehead to our mouth, kept balloons in the air, transferred M&Ms from one plate to another through a straw, and practiced our rubber band archery skills by knocking over wattle bottles. We laughed with each other, had a ton of fun, learned that we have some pretty sharp shooters with a rubber band, and decided that if Scott wasn’t sending you the best flight deals for a living, he’d have a solid future as a balloon juggler.

It’s always important that we build an inclusive agenda for the team as we have folks who enjoy all types of events. Wild Dunes is known for their chill vibes at the beach or by the pool - which is a dream destination for all of our beach lovers. But what about those who need a little more oomph in their day? We set up fun activities like a Charleston Scavenger hunt, cocktail making competition, a wicked game of combat archery (think dodgeball but with foam-tipped arrows), learned about blacksmithing, and spent a night singing our hearts away at a karaoke bar. We always make these events voluntary so you can opt in to the events or sit poolside - whatever floats your boat!

Thursday evening is our final team bonding activity. To celebrate an awesome week together, we took a private boat tour to Capers Island. We learned about the amazing South Carolina marine ecosystem, saw some dolphins, and even had fresh oysters picked right from the oyster bay! At Capers Island, we had an impromptu photoshoot at boneyard beach before enjoying a sunset low-country boil dinner together.

Retreats are a great way for remote teams to get out of their everyday lives, explore a new destination, and build stronger bonds. Despite all the hiccups, such as unpredictable weather and flight changes, we left the retreat super pumped and stoked for our September retreat in 🥁🥁🥁...
